Scotland reveals true extent of homelessness

More homeless households are receiving help from local authorities, according to latest figures released by the Scottish Executive.

The Housing (Scotland) Act 2001 means that everyone who is homeless is now entitled to somewhere to stay, normally until they are able to find more settled accommodation.

Dr Andrew Waugh, Policy Officer of Scottish Council for Single Homeless, comments:

"The statistics are revealing that more homeless people are coming forward - now that they know improved help is available. Unlike the rest of the UK , every homeless application in Scotland is electronically recorded and this allows for more accurate and reliable information to be collected. What we are seeing here is the true extent of Scotland 's problem being uncovered and this clearer picture is to be welcomed."

"Along with preventative measures, we need to make sure that stays in temporary accommodation are as short as possible by ensuring there is an adequate supply of permanent, affordable accommodation, in the right locations, for people to move-on to. Support must also be provided for those who need help in sustaining a tenancy to avoid repeat homelessness."
